Pregnancy Gingivitis – You Are At More Risk of Inflamed Gums When You Are Pregnant Than Any Other Time

During pregnancy your body is flooded with various hormones such as progesterone as part of the process of conceiving and carrying a brand new human. This release of hormones unfortunately makes your gums more sensitive to dental plaque. Around two thirds of women will be struck by pregnancy gingivitis, an inflammation of the gums.


Pregnancy gingivitis can be a problem, as it can lead to loss of bone around the tooth, tooth decay or even the loss of a tooth. For this reason, it’s important to brush thoroughly twice a day and floss once a day. Brushing thoroughly would be considered brushing the outside, inside and bottom of your teeth for a duration of at least two minutes as a whole.

Use a good toothpaste while you are pregnant especially. Some are designed specifically to fight against plaque and pregnancy gingivitis whereas others are a little more basic. Following up brushing and flossing with a good bacteria fighting mouthwash is a great way to add further protection for your oral care. Ensure however that you choose an alcohol free formulation whilst you are pregnant.

Keep your nutrition in check. A balanced diet of good proteins, complex carbohydrates and healthy fats is important to ward off pregnancy gingivitis. Too much simple carbohydrates (i.e. Sugar) can undermine your oral care. Ensure you are getting enough vitamin A, C, D and phosphorous. These vitamins and minerals are instrumental in the development of your babies’ teeth.

During this time you should keep in regular contact with your dentist. Contact them at the first sign of any outward problems with your teeth or gums. They may recommend that you get extra dental cleanings during the latter half of your pregnancy. This is as release of progesterone during this period can raise the risk of developing pregnancy gingivitis.
